Offline- the life beyond the screens
Curatorial Theme – TIPF 2026 | 9th Edition #OFFLINE – Life Beyond the Screen:
In an era where human experience is increasingly mediated by screens, where algorithms filter memory, emotion and attention, and where artificial intelligence is reshaping the way we work, communicate and perceive reality, a fundamental question arises: What remains of the human experience when we disconnect from the network?
The 9th edition of Tirana Photo Festival proposes the theme #Offline not as a rejection of technology, but as an act of critical, poetic, political and visual reflection on physical experience, real presence and a direct relationship with the world, body, nature and community. In a time of hyper-connection online, the paradox is the great social isolation that has severely affected youth everywhere today. In a time of hyper-communication, the paradox is the loneliness that
transversally affects our society. And finally, in a time of hyper-exposure, the paradox is an iconographic turbine of images that mostly pass without any public impact through our screens.
#Offline seeks to propose, to bring to the center the return of attention, slow time, human contact, as well as experiences that exist beyond life and digital mediation.
The Curatorial Approach of the 9th Edition of TIPF is, contrary to what it may seem, a look forward. This is because #Offline is not a nostalgic call for a pre-digital world, nor a demonization of technology. On the contrary, it aims for a critical reappraisal of the human experience, asking how we can preserve authenticity, intimacy, and sensitivity in an increasingly virtual reality. Photography still remains in the public perception as a medium of real time and human perspective; even today, photography (and of course video documentation) remains one of the most powerful formats for documenting, protecting, and re-imaging the true dimension of life, what Oliviero Toscani emphasized as the Human Condition.
In this edition, Tirana Photo Festival aims to create a visual map of human presence, a collective archive of what exists beyond the screen, and naturally, with it a space for dialogue between professionals and the general public. #Offline invites artists and participants to explore through several thematic axes and specifically: real life beyond digital mediation; intimacy, closeness and human relationships off the screen; manual labor, craftsmanship, agriculture and crafts; care, solidarity and forms of community. This edition of TIPF also offers to study public spaces as real places of meeting and interaction, nature as a territory of the return of the self as well as play, childhood and slow time or rituals, traditions, belonging and collective memory.
Festival Structure – Three competitive categories
The festival selects an international and multidisciplinary jury every year which judges on the artistic input and selects the winners according to the categories. Tirana International Photo Festival has an active online platform and dedicated channels on Instagram and Youtube where the works, artists and
activities are presented. The online sections function as an archive, digital exhibition and international
communication tool, for the following three categories:
1. Single Photo – Photography competition (1–5 photographs)
A section open to the general public, amateur photographers, art lovers and professionals, aiming at
democratic inclusion and mass participation. – Each participant submits from 1 to 5 photographs – The jury and curators select the 100 best photographs in accordance with the theme – The festival curators create an installation exhibition with the photographs in public and open spaces, one of the most important and identifying characteristics of Tirana Photo Festival – Outdoor exhibitions aim to interact directly with the city and passers-by, bringing photography outside the institutional walls and democratizing it more.
2. Photo Series – Photographic Projects (min 10 photographs)
Competition dedicated mainly to professional photographers and artists who present conceptually structured photographic projects, in accordance with the theme #Offline. – Projects conceived as a series or visual narrative (storytelling). – The curatorial selection of these projects realizes the official annual exhibition of the festival. The section aims for conceptual depth, artistic research, and documentary or experimental approaches
3. Video (short) – (max 2 videos)
This is a competition dedicated to the world of the moving image, which extends the #Offline theme to contemporary visual forms such as short videos, mini documentaries, video-art, reels or hybrid forms.
This section of the festival also focuses on visual narrative, real-time and human experience. The selected works are presented on the festival’s online platforms
Parallel and Educational Activities – (TIPF Parallel):
Tirana Photo Festival is not just a competition, but an educational and community platform.
These activities aim to share knowledge and competencies in the field of art, create artistic and international networks, as well as bring the public, practitioners, amateurs or young artists closer to the real practice of photography. The festival activities this year also include:
– Meetings with renowned artists and art curators – Workshops for photography. video, concept or AI.
– Photo Safari, one of the best and original traditions of TIPF, organized every year as a photographic expedition with professional photographers, open to the amateur public, students and art lovers.
